- Grade Level Kindergarten
- Content Area: Science
- Unit: Season
- Length of Unit 2 weeks
- Time of Year: First 2 weeks in September
To introduce the unit, students will work in groups to create a concept map, coming up with at least three words to describe what they think of when they hear summer, fall, winter or spring

Summer
Introduce summer as one of the four season. Discuss the aspects of summer (e.g., weather, months, activities)
Learning Object: Each student watches the video, Why is hot in the summer?
Learning Project: After watching the above video, each student creates a podcast to respond to the question: Why is it hot in the summer?

Gardening is an activity that takes place during summer. What does it take for plants to grow? Why do they grow best in summer? Why do we need plants? To introduce students to a plant's life cycle, read aloud with the class A Seed Grows: My First Look at a Plant's Life Cycle by Pamela Hickman.
Learning Object: Dottie's Garden
Students can view this story to reinforce their understanding of what a plant needs to grow.
Learning Project: Students will explore plants from around the school and choose one to photograph. Students will then create a fotobabble describing their photo.

Learning Object: Engage students with a 3D virtual tour of insects.
Learning Object: Insect Hunt Let students explore different types of insects and where they live.
After learning about multiple insects, each student will choose insect they found interesting to create a page of a class book about insects.
Learning Project: Each student should use technology to design a page about their insect. It must include text which identifies the type of insect and an intersting fact about it. They also must include an image (online or clip art).

Additional Learning Object: Summer Activities
Students can access this website to see more summer activities and play games.
Fall
Introduce fall as one of the seasons and talk about what they think of when they hear the word fall.
Learning Object: Students will watch video "Why do leaves change color in autumn?"
Learning Project: Students will create a Voki telling why leaves change color in autumn.

As a class come up with words that deal with fall/autumn
Learning Object: Students will play Fall Word Search game with all words about fall/autumn.
Learning Project: Students will make a Wordle with words about fall/autumn.

Learning Object: Students will read the book Autumn Leaves online.
Learning Project: Students will create their own book on StoryJumper about fall.

Fall- This is a link to the StoryJumper I made.

Winter
As a class, brainstorm words that come to mind when one thinks of the word "winter."
Learning Object: Students will play this Word-O-Rama snow and ice game to practice and learn new vocabulary.
Using these "winter words," students will make their own word cloud using Tagxedo. These will be printed off and hung around the room.

Learning Object: What is a winter storm? Learn the basics and read witness accounts of historical winter storms. After reviewing these readings with the class, learn some winter weather vocabulary
Learning Object: Students will play this Word-O-Rama snow and ice game to practice their vocabulary.
Students will learn about different activities that come with winter. In a group, students will take pictures and create a Photo Story, using narration and music to demonstrate some activities.

Learning Object: Read The Mitten by Jan Brett and complete this activity to review characters and check comprehension (scroll down and click on Interactive activity)
Learning Object: Weather Maker Students will learn how changing three components in the atmosphere changes the weather to make snow.
Summing it all up:
Learning Objective: students will play The Four Seasons game to review and learn about their own seasons where they live. They will each have one fact recorded about the season they are assigned.
Learning Project: The class will get together and use Skype in the Classroom with the teachers help to contribute to the lesson of seasons around the world. They will share with other classrooms what they experience as well as the seasons we have in the U.S. (It would be awesome to realize that not everywhere gets snow for Christmas, for example!)

object: Students will view this song about the 4-seasons.
Learning Project: Students will use the words they have previously brainstormed about each season to give descriptions, in groups, and create a assessment to test if their classmates can guess the season correctly.
